It was clear from the start that the 1900s-era kitchen of the 2023 Whole Home would need to undergo a complete transformation. Laid out in an era when the homeowners weren’t the ones doing the cooking, it was cramped, dark, and seriously outdated, says award-winning Kansas City-based designer Laura McCroskey. But even as she planned to modernize the room, McCroskey still wanted to preserve what was special about the home. “The house was unique and had so much personality. We didn’t want to go too modern; we wanted it to be a fresh take but still completely in line with the original look,” she says. Her artful renovation included four updates that helped her team achieve that goal.
